Chelsea development squad came from behind to win Feyenoord 2-1, after scoring two goals in 2 minutes, in the group opener of the Premier League International Cup.
U23 coach Adi Viveash was pleased with his players, and he told the official Chelsea website:
“It was what we expected it to be,”
“Feyenoord are a very good technical team and they played some lovely football at times, although I felt we created the better chances in the first half. We had to be at our maximum at times but we did okay before half-time.” He said.
Viveash reserved praise for the persistence of his side and the impact he was able to initiate with his changes from the bench.
“I was really pleased with our patience,” he said. “We changed our shape and were able to add some real quality off the bench that made an impact. Dujon is always positive when he comes on and he was great again, Mason Mount gives us a bit of quality in the final third, and Martell Taylor-Crossdale did brilliantly with a positive run and good cross for the winner.”
He added: “It’s a good night, a great win against a very good team. It hopefully means that we’re learning from our experiences in the Checkatrade Trophy in that we’re not playing catch-up in the group now, which we know makes life very difficult. It’s three points on the board and I’m pleased for the boys. That’s three games played in eight days now; we’ve been behind in every one and come back to take something out of the game.”
