Chelsea’s remarkable run of form this season has been one to admire. It has left pundits tipping us for the title even though it’s still early days. But can you blame them? Chelsea have what is obviously the most balanced squad in the league at the moment. Every department appears more functional than ever; from defence to attack, even our midfield. In our last six league outings, we have recorded 6 wins on the throt; scoring 17 goals and conceding none in the process. Against Middlesborough on Sunday, it could have been more than the one goal, but for Victor Valdes’ heroics, and a bit of ill-luck on our part, finishing wise.
We’re top of the league, and everything is working out just perfectly for Chelsea at the moment. There couldn’t be a better time to be a Chelsea fan than now. Conte’s 3-4-3 system has proven very good, as our defensive issues appear sorted out. Before its introduction, we conceded in almost every other game, except against Burnley. The back 3 of Cahill, Luiz and Azpilicueta are a lot more aware and revitalised than ever, and as much as they deserve plenty credit for helping us to our current position this season, I think that we must also acknowledge the role our number one shot stopper has played in our journey so far.
To say that Thihabout Courtois has done little in our last six games would be to under appreciate the man. You can argue that he’s had little to do in the past few games, but certainly not that he’s done any less than the 3 defenders in front of him. He has been in some really good form, that is the simple truth. He had a poor 2015/16, but 16/17 has definitely seen him return to his brilliant best. He has pulled off some remarkable saves against top opposition. Against Man United, any other goal keeper could easily have conceded 4 or more, but Courtois made sure he preserved our run. I remember him making a very great save against Herrera of United in that game. Against Middlesborough on Sunday, his quick reflexes ensured that the score remained in our favor, when he stretched to put out Negredo’s spectacular effort towards the latter stages of the game.
Courtois’ fine form hasn’t only reflected in Chelsea’s games alone, as he’s also been in great form for his home country, Belgium this term. Whatever Conte, Martinez, and those around him are doing to him, it’s definitely paying off for us, and I hope that he continues to stay fit to carry on his fine run. As I mentioned earlier, I acknowledge the contribution of our defence to our good run of 6 clean sheets, however, I like to always look beyond the surface, and I think that Courtois deserves Just as much appreciation as they.
