David Luiz grew up at the same club as Arthur Maia, and Maia was among the victims of the Chapecoense plane crash in Colombia on Tuesday.

Reports confirm that just six people of the 81 survived the plane crash with just three of the Chapecoense team making it out alive.

Very little was known about Chapecoense before today, but stories have already emerged about how they were a team comparable to Leicester, on a rise up the divisions and to a major cup final, and had united the whole of Brazil.

The 24-year-old spent much of his youth career at Vitoria just like David Luiz, and the Chelsea defender has penned a heartfelt tribute to the Chapecoense player via his instagram page.

David Luiz’s tribute

Know that one day I had the pleasure to meet you and have you as a little brother.

Then we lost contact for each one to follow his way and today wake up and know that you are no longer among us.

With this news that breaks hearts around the world.

I cannot believe it!

May God comfort your family, friends and all the families involved!

I keep this image saved as I always had of a pure and dreamy boy!

God bless you!!

Praying for all!

Chelsea is more than just a football club to me; it's a passion I share, and my affinity with the Chelsea badge is one that will last forever. As far as watching my favourite team is concerned, I'd rather miss a meal than miss a Chelsea game.
