Marcos Alonso

Ex-Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins isn’t impressed with the quality of Chelsea left wing-back Marcos Alonso and believes Ryan Bertrand would have done a better job.

Jose Mourinho sanctioned the sale of Ryan Bertrand in 2015 to Southampton where he has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

Wilkins isn’t sure of Alonso’s quality and thinks Ryan Bertrand is a better player.

“When you look at the players he has at his disposal, he has very intelligent footballers,” Wilkins told Sky Sports.

“Therefore it shouldn’t take too long to get over how he wants them to play.

“Victor Moses has been a revelation at Chelsea this season but I am not too sure about Alonso on the left hand side.

“I would prefer Ryan Bertrand there but they sold him for £10 million and brought in Alonso for £30 million.

“I can’t quite add up that maths. They would be stronger down the left with Bertrand.”
