A host of Chelsea players who are finding game time hard to get were in action for the Chelsea U23 side in the Premier League 2 yesterday.
Premier League 2 sides are permitted to field up to three over-age outfield players, and Van Ginkel, Cesc Fabregas and John Terry played for the Chelsea B side. Kurt Zouma and Michy Batshuayi are below 23, so were eligible to play, while Eduardo was in goal.
The Blues featured a strong lineup (Eduardo; Zouma, Terry , Tomori; Dabo (c), Van Ginkel, Fabregas, Aina; Solanke, Batshuayi, Mount) to face Southampton in the Premier League 2 yesterday, and the game ended 3-2 in favour of the Blues.
Batshuayi bagged two goals in the 3-2 win but it was Van Ginkel that stole the headlines against Southampton when he netted a stunning late winner from the edge of the box with a brilliant curling effort.
Van Ginkel has been struggling with injury and is yet to play a competitive senior team football this season.
But then, Mikel Obi who has been on the fringes of the Chelsea team will also need to boost his fitness in the Premier League 2 side. Should he also join the Chelsea development squad to get game time?
