Branislav Ivanovic didn’t start for Chelsea today against Brentford in the FA Cup fourth round match, but he was brought on with about 26 minutes left to play.
Ivanovic has been strongly linked with a Chelsea exit before the close of the summer transfer window, and his performance today just showed he can still come up with the goods.
Conte talked about the Serbian ahead of today’s game against Brentford, but he didn’t clarify if Ivanovic will leave this window or remain with the club until the end of the season.
“He’s in the squad,” said Conte. “There are four days (until the transfer window closes) and there is a lot of speculation. I don’t know if something will happen with him.”
However, if Ivanovic eventually leaves Chelsea this January, he’d definitely leave as a Blues legend, and with a farewell goal.
Five minutes after coming on for Willian, Ivanovic started a nice move as he exchanged passes with Zouma, went forward and exchanged passes with Pedro before calmly slotting the ball into the net to make the scoreline 3-0. About 10 minutes later, he won a penalty kick, which Michy Batshuayi duly converted.
If Ivanovic leaves this summer, then he just got himself a farewell goal.
