Sam Hutchinson is a product of the Chelsea academy and was a promising right-back at Chelsea before a chrondral defect (a hole in his right knee) forced him to retire in August 2009 aged 21.
Hutchinson returned to playing football again 18 months after and he now plays for Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.
Hutchinson revealed he was so depressed while he had the injury that forced him to retire that he blamed Chelsea for the injury even though it wasn’t Chelsea’s fault.
“I just wanted to stop the pain and stop everything. I never wanted to come back,” Hutchinson told The Guardian as he talked about his decision to retire at such a young age.
“I didn’t want to play for Chelsea either because I blamed them for it, even though it wasn’t [their fault], it was just what happened.”
