Chelsea’s 13 game winning run came to an end on Wednesday night with the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham but Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Conte should have started Fabregas due to Tottenham’s high press.
Merson believes Tottenham could easily press Kante and Matic but Tottenham would have found it difficult to press Fabregas.
“It’s crucial how Chelsea respond but I’ve seen it coming,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“They play with their wing-backs and work their socks off and it’s been going well.
“But this Christmas programme has caught up with them because they aren’t playing once a week.
“They were very tired against Tottenham.
“When you’re playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday – you have a problem.
“Conte missed a trick against Spurs. Fabregas had to play.
“Tottenham were always going to press Chelsea and suffocate them and they could do that to Kante and Matic.
“If he played Fabregas, Tottenham would have dropped off because of what he can do.”
