Ian McHale, the professor of sports analytics at the University of Salford, has developed SAM (Sports Analytics Machine) along with his colleague Dr Tarak Kharrat, and the machine has gone on to make its prediction for the remainder of the season.

As we all expect, it has tipped Chelsea to win the league this season, while Arsenal and Manchester United will miss out on Champions League places.

When asked to simulate Premier League results until the end of the season, SAM claims that Arsenal and United fans are set to be left disappointed.

It found that Chelsea are poised to pull away from the pack and secure the Premier League title seven points ahead of second-placed Tottenham, while Liverpool will beat Manchester City to third on goal difference, while the Gunners fall one point short of making the top four.

It also claims that United will end the season seven points adrift of the Champions League places.
