We’ve been here before – a situation where a player rows with his manager and shows discontent. A dilemma where a club is faced with a player trying to force a big-money move(you can ask WestHam United about Dimitri Payet impasse). Well, Chelsea are sure in a battle to keep their talismanic and enigmatic striker, Diego Costa whose head might have been turned by the Chinese cash flow. But if reports are true, the striker is said not to interested in such a move, but has told friends that he’s not signing a new Chelsea deal.
This is somehow an unwanted distraction that can lead to destruction in our superb season so far. In 2010, quite similar to Costa’s saga, Wayne Rooney requested to leave Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson had told Rooney he was in danger of making the biggest mistake of his professional life.
“Sometimes, when you’re in a club, it can be hard to realise just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the last few days to make you understand,” the Fergie said.”
In reference to that statement, Rooney later signed a new deal at the club. Costa can learn from this and make amends as soon as possible. But in case he still wants to leave either now or in the summer, here are five players that can replace him at Chelsea:
Swansea’s tall Spanish striker has the physicality, work rate, attacking prowess and aerial ability which compensates for his relative lack of pace is enough to get him a move to Chelsea. His good relationship with Chelsea Manager, Antonio Conte is a no-brainer that surely makes this an ideal move. Having both worked together at Juventus, Lorente will surely know what Conte demands from his players. It will be like duck to water if he eventually joins.
The rampaging striker is also a good fit for Chelsea’s style. Currently at Juventus where his playing time is quite limited due to the presence of Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala, this move to vie for the top striker position with Michy Batshuayi looks a better prospect. His work rate, poacher’s instinct and team play makes him a player to consider if Costa decides to leave.
The former Chelsea striker will certainly be a name on the lips of many fans as an ideal replacement. His hulk-like frame, scoring touch and admirable adaptation to the league makes a strong case for his inclusion in this list. Hopefully Everton will be willing to sell after their summer reluctance to let go of him.
Inter Milan’s Argentine Striker is also a name that has linked with the club in the past. His scoring prowess is quite startling considering the flattering position of his current club. He has been the livewire of Inter and still continues to turbo-charge and drive their resurgence. Will surely be a good fit if Costa eventually departs.
The Real Madrid striker was so much coveted and wanted by Coach, Antonio Conte. The Spaniard’s finishing ability, aerial threat, physique, pace and team play makes him the best of the best as an ideal replacement if Costa decides to leave. But whether Real Madrid will be willing to sell remains another ball game.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed and watch as this saga unfolds. Cheers!
