After Saturday’s lunchtime game win over Arsenal, even the most absurd Chelsea fan would definitely be counting the games. We can’t just wait for Chelsea to be engraved as title winners come the end of the season. With matches against Burnley(a), Swansea(h), West Ham(a), Everton(a), Middlesborough(h), Watford(h), Stoke City(a), Manchester City(h), Crystal Palace(h), Bournemouth(a), WestBrom(a), Manchester United(a), Southampton(h), Sunderland(h). Out of these remaining fixtures, we must overcome these five potential games to boost our title ambition:
Slaven Bilic’s side are a force when in their element. They can be devastating and too good and can also cause an upset. Moreover, this is a London Derby with so much passion involved and expect West Ham to do us no favours. A potential tricky game that could cost us points if we don’t approach it with the right mentality.
Everton have played the role of Chelsea’s ‘bogey’ team in recent seasons, but our dominant display against them at Stamford bridge was sign of our title ambition. Certainly in our current form, we can beat any side. But Everton are now a better side than when we beat them and with the ferocity of the Evertonian voices, this game can surely have an impact in the title race. So far, against the top teams at Goodison Park, only Liverpool have gained victory there with a narrow 1-0 scoreline. Arsenal and Manchester City were defeated, while United could only get a draw. Chelsea must be at full throttle to advance in this game.
This is another potential banana-peel game where we might just drop points. Stoke City away is not an easy fixture and despite them not possessing the steel of Tony Pulis era, Mark Hughes side are still a decent side that can cause havoc. They scored two (one of the two teams alongside Spurs to score two against us since our defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates) and gave us shivers with a strong showing in our first meeting with them. Let’s expect even much more as they’ll certainly relish a battle to claim all three points against us.
Many will question my inclusion of Manchester City in this list considering the fact we beat them at the Etihad. But make no mistake about it, City are a big team and will certainly take the game to us. If we underestimate them then it’s at our own peril. This will surely be a hugely contested game with so much at stake. Manchester City will be looking to cement their place in the top four as we make the push for the title. Possibly they might also be looking to revenge that cruel loss against us earlier this season. Let’s expect a battle.
Can José Mourinho put a dent to Chelsea’s title bid? He’s the master of the dark arts of pragmatism. Just rewind to his plot in the death of Liverpool title ambition in 2014. Can he cook up a similar plot against Chelsea? Certainly both the Manchester United manager and his players will be looking to get one over Chelsea after enduring that embarrassing 4-0 defeat earlier in the season at Stamford Bridge. Let’s watch for this game as a real firecracker in the title race.
Let’s keep the blue flag flying high as we continue in our quest for league glory. Cheers!
