Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma spent a long spell on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate ligament injury during a game against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge last season.
Despite the setback, 22-year-old Zouma is still an ever buoyant presence in the squad and the defender has now revealed being happy isn’t just his nature, it’s also his middle name.
His father named him after a Jean-Claude Van Damme’s character Kurt Sloane in the film Kickboxer and his middle name is “Happy”.
“Yeah it’s true, it was my father (who decided the middle name of Happy),’ Zouma revealed in an interview with Daily Mirror.
“When my mother was pregnant, my father was watching a Van Damme movie. He was killing everybody and fighting everyone.
“And my father said, ‘Yeah, this one we’re going to call him Kurt because he’s going to be strong, and Happy because he’s going to laugh every time.’”
Zouma also revealed how his happy nature helped him recover from his long-term injury.
“If you are mentally good, your recovery is going to be better and quicker, that’s my philosophy,” Zouma added.
“If you give up and you’re sad every day you’re going to struggle. I keep laughing. I’m still young, enjoy the life. I’m a footballer, I have a great life. So let’s laugh.”
