Jose Mourinho sold Juan Mata to Manchester United when he was Chelsea boss despite Juan Mata winning Chelsea’s Player of the Year award for two consecutive seasons.
Mourinho, now boss at Manchester United, claims Juan Mata is a better player now at Manchester United than he was at Chelsea.
“When I came here people thought Mata was in trouble but I knew he wouldn’t be in trouble,” Mourinho said as quoted by Metro UK.
“One thing was the football I wanted my Chelsea to play and the other thing I want my Manchester United to play.
“Mata has adapted to the football I want to play. I knew since the beginning he would be an important player.
“I think he feels that confidence in me, that confidence in the game we want to try to play.
“So he is happy. He is happy on the pitch and you can see it the way he plays.”
Well, I think Mourinho is just being Mourinho. Mata scored 12 Premier League goals and had 12 assists for Chelsea in the 2012/13 season before Mourinho’s return to Chelsea. Despite Mata’s brilliance, Mourinho sold Mata to Manchester United during the 2013/14 season.
Mourinho claims Mata is a better player now than he was at Chelsea but Mata has scored just 6 Premier League goals for Manchester United this season and has only 2 assists compared to the 12 goals and 12 assists in the league he had for Chelsea before Mourinho’s return to Chelsea.
