The complexity of modern football gives room for marital divorce between players and clubs. Such scenarios can be influenced by differences in valuation of players worth in relation to their abilities in the long-run. Contractual disputes over the years has often left clubs in losing positions as rules as the Webster’s and Bosman’s. These rules give players the bargaining power in new deals offered by their respective clubs. If they are not satisfied with the offer on table, they can afford to buy out their contracts and leave the club(Webster’s rule) or run down their existing contracts and leave on a free transfer on the expiration of it. More so, the presence of ‘serial-killer football agents’ surely make things left for the worst as most times clubs are overpriced out of a deal.
In hindsight, Chelsea must look to tie down key players to the club with new and improved deals. Here are 4 players that deserve this:
Much have been made of the Belgian stopper’s long-term commitment to Chelsea. Last season, stories emanated from the media concerning his unrest at the club and desire to return to Spain. Rumours of him being linked with transfers to Spain’s two biggest capital clubs: Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid is a stinker. After enduring a torrid second season at the club, the superstar shot-stopper is back to his best. Shrewdly, Chelsea need to quickly tie him down to a new & improved deal in order to fend off potential suitors, especially with just two years left in his current deal with the club. In a recent interview, the player professed his desire to stay at Chelsea. Here’s what he had to say:
“I have two more years of contract left,” Courtois told Spanish radio Cadena Ser.
“Would I like to be offered a new deal? Sure.
“I’m very happy at Chelsea and if they want to continue with me, that would be great.
“I don’t see myself at Real Madrid. I see myself at Chelsea. I feel like a key player within the team.
Certainly, the onus is on Chelsea to secure the deal.
After last summer’s confession of regretting leaving Barcelona to join Chelsea and his publicized efforts to rejoin them, the Spanish winger burnt his bridges with the Chelsea faithful. But his swashbuckling performances, eye-catching displays and creation of magical moments like his goals against Manchester United, Spurs and Swansea has endeared him to the fans. Surely the Spaniard deserves an extension to his current deal as he looks like a player on a mission to set the world alight. His current form gives indication of him enjoying his prime/peak period and this would be beneficial to the club.
The Serbian midfielder’s professionalism is hugely admirable and with his current deal due to expire in 2018, it will be sensible for the club to offer him a new & improved deal. The midfielder’s rise from Chelsea’s youth rank to being a powerful first-team player is a testament to his unique ability and influence at the club.
The Belgian magician is unarguably Chelsea’s most valuable player. The need to offer him an improved deal is a no-brainer in order to fend off interest from Real Madrid. His eye-catching displays this season still make the superstar player that runs the show for Chelsea both on and off the field.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed as we hope for the best. Cheers!
