Chelsea have been linked with Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk in the past and reportedly tried to sign him during the January transfer window, but Southampton held on to their star defender.
The Saints might struggle to keep him this summer, as Chelsea and Manchester City might try to sign him at all costs, but former Liverpool midfielder turned pundit Jamie Redknapp has told Pep Guardiola to beat Chelsea to the signing of the Dutchman if they want to challenge for the Premier League.
“City have had so many different centre back partnerships this season it is embarrassing. They need to find a regular centre back partner for John Stones,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
“Pep Guardiola is going to be given time to sort things out and he needs to break the bank and sign Virgil van Dijk.
“The Dutchman would be the perfect fit for City — he is strong, quick and superb in one-on-ones.
“Guardiola’s priority must be to ensure that the Southampton defender does not start next season wearing a Chelsea shirt.
“For now, his main objective is to make sure City finish in the top four.”
