What compelling sport football is as its charm offensive can keep one spell-bound. It’s a dynamic sport that alters its nature to create the moods it desires. One of such change is that of Chelsea Brazilian defender, David Luiz. A player derided and criticised by pundits for his erratic and overambitious style of play during his first stint at Chelsea has emerged as a lynchpin in their tremendous season so far. The Brazilian did not need much fanfare to endear himself to the Chelsea faithful. On his debut, he scored the equalizer in the game against Manchester United at home. He was a winter summer signing alongside Fernando Torres in 2011, but his performances were caught up between magnificent and mediocrity (Gary Neville’s famous sarcastic jibe of him playing like a player on PlayStation being controlled by a little kid). Eventually he left for Paris Saint Germain  in a £50m bargain deal that shocked the football world.

Just last summer came another twist as Chelsea re-signed him and he’s been absolutely outstanding since his return back to the club.

Here are 3 reasons why he has defied his critics and has become a better player:

There are just a few certain managers that can bring out the best in a player, and Antonio Conte is one of them. Often deployed in a back four as one of a pair of central defenders, David Luiz has often struggled to give his best. His defensive frailty killed his amazing ball-playing skills. But Conte’s decision to change to a three-man defensive setup flanked by wingbacks was a masterstroke that has not only transformed Chelsea’s fortunes but also that of his star player, David Luiz. The defender as the central defence sweeper and quarterback often expected to start the attack from the back as a defensive outlet and as well break up play and guard against any opposition surge into the area, the Brazilian looks a better defender than he has ever been.

How many players can hit the ground running even when being played out of position? I can bet that David Luiz is one of a few who can do that admirably. Having being deployed in different roles from being a left-back to a makeshift holding midfielder to a striker, the Brazilian can hold claim to being a well-rounded player. His ability to adapt to circumstances and also being able to take up positions in areas where his team is lacking makes him an irresistible pick. Thus, it’s no surprise to see him so excellent at what he’s doing this season at Chelsea.

Sources close to the club revealed during the summer that one of the reasons why Chelsea resigned David Luiz was because Roman Abramovich is a huge fan of the Brazilian and also that the club viewed him as the next captain after current skipper, John Terry. David Luiz’s charisma makes him loveable and his passion for Chelsea reflects in the way he plays as he does well to cover every blade of grass. Truly, he’s a true Blue as it’s obvious his heart is Chelsea’s. He has found the club to be his home. This has helped him focus more on playing his game in the best way and no wonder his performances have been brilliant. This has been a contributory factor in the club’s title surge. Surely, his best is yet to be seen.

Let’s hope to see more eye-catching performance from our superstar defender. Cheers!
