Claude Makelele was the king of the holding midfield role – he was so good that the role was named after him, as he earned legendary status in his time at Stamford Bridge.
However, Arsenal legend and football pundit Paul Merson believes N’Golo Kante is doing a better job in the midfield role than the Chelsea legend.
In his column for the Mirror, Paul Merson wrote: “To win the title with two different clubs is some doing, and he’s been a massive part of both Leicester and now Chelsea.
“He’s everywhere on the pitch. I’ve never seen a player so fit, but he never ends up on the floor, giving fouls away. He’s always nicking it away, and you can’t get past him.
People compare him to Claude Makelele but they’re different players. Makelele just used to sit in front of the back four and mop things up. Kante is all over the place.
“He goes hunting and he wins you the ball and gives it to players like Hazard. His stamina is amazing. But he just doesn’t have Hazard’s talent, and that’s why I’d give the award to him.
“A prime example was the goal against Bournemouth last weekend. Not many players could do that.”
