Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system has been copied by almost every Premier League manager, and all of a sudden, it’s now an old system.
Antonio Conte introduced the system to Chelsea after a 3-0 loss to Arsenal, and the Blues went on to win 13 league games in a row after that. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and now Arsene Wenger have used the formation.
Just like Pochettino, Wenger has also claimed that he has used the formation before, over 20 to 30 years ago.
Arsenal have now won three games in a row with the 3-4-3 system and Wenger told Sky Sports in an exclusive interview that the formation is an old one.
Wenger said: “In fairness I wanted to do it a month-and-a-half ago, but I thought no, maybe we shouldn’t destroy the way we have played before, because we were 20 games unbeaten. When the confidence becomes fragile, sometimes just to focus on something different is important.
“At the moment it looks like it gets the best out of every player. It’s not a new system because I played it 20, 30 years ago! But it’s a system that sometimes brings some reassurance when the defensive confidence is not at the best.”
So how come Wenger forgot the formation all these years until Chelsea became so successful with it?
