Chelsea are champions of England, and it could be said that Chelsea’s rise to dominance was built on team efforts. However, there were a few standout performers who propelled Chelsea to the league. The likes of N’Golo Kante, Eden Hazard and Diego Costa have been on the limelight since the start of the season, but one player who has been very important but hasn’t been given just enough recognition is Cesar Azpilicueta.
These stats just prove that Azpilicueta has been a very key figure for Chelsea this season:
1. The Spaniard has played every single minute of every single Premier League game this season, and is the only player to do so for Chelsea this term. This just shows how irreplaceable he has been.
2. The versatile defender has become the first player to notch up 2,000 completed passes this season.
3. The Spaniard is the only defender in the top 10 for completed passes this season. The rest of this top ten are all midfielders.
4. He is also the only defender to have racked up 1,000 passes in the opposition’s half (1,003 in total). And one of those was the pass to Michy Batshuayi at West Brom last week, which set up the title-winning goal.

Indeed, Azpilicueta hasn’t only been a rock in the Chelsea defence, he has also been a rock in Chelsea’s title win, having played as a left-back, a centre-back and a wing-back this season.
