Chelsea are Champions of England for the second time in 3 years, and the fifth time in 12 seasons in the Premier league era. No intended acrimony, but the truth is we have won more league titles than Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester City in the English Premier League era. Quite a remarkable achievement by all standards and to add gloss to it, Chelsea is ranked alongside Manchester United as two of most successful clubs in the Premier league era. Our passion for success is unrivaled and undisputed.
What better way can we erase the bitter memories of last season than winning the title in style this season. Our manager, Antonio Conte has been absolutely fantastic as well the players. But in choosing my top 5 performers, I’ll be picking from every area of the team – the goalie, the defence, the midfield and the attack, with considerations only for players who made at least 10 league appearances or produced ‘Macheda moments’. Let’s begin:
GOALIE – THIBAUT COURTOIS
How on earth he suffered a dip in form last season which stirred up much criticism from both the media and pundits is quite puzzling. But a return to form and fitness has seen the Belgian shot stopper prove his worth as one of the best goalies in the world. More impressive were his commanding presence over his back line, incredible last ditch saves and improved ball skills which set the team on the front foot often at times this season. It was a great season for the brilliant goalkeeper and he sure receives my 5-star rating.
DEFENCE – CESAR AZPILICUETA
The Spanish defender has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent top performers over the years despite playing in variety of positions in his successful Chelsea career so far. Chelsea’s ‘Mr. Reliable has been excellent in this campaign as part of manager, Antonio Conte’s rebranded Chelsea. He just nudges David Luiz by a mile in my 5-star team selection.
MIDFIELD – NGOLO KANTE
The Football Writers Player of the Year and PFA Player of the Year has been phenomenal since his arrival in English football. His application of brawn and brain clearly improved Chelsea and surely deserves to be in my 5-star team selection.
ATTACK – EDEN HAZARD AND PEDRO RODRIGUEZ
The presence of both players in Chelsea’s matchday squad as a triumvirate alongside Diego Costa is fearsome. The sulking skills, pace, trickery, power, drive, passion and goals of both players propelled Chelsea to the stars.
Let’s celebrate our stars. You can add a comment of your top 5 best performers of this season. Cheers!
