In recent times, Chelsea have been the only Premier League club to do well in the Champions League. The likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and even Tottenham have performed woefully in the Champions League.
Besides being the last English team to win the Champions League, Chelsea are also the last from the Premier League to reach the Champions League semifinals.
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has admitted that the Blues might still be the only team that will truly represent England in the Champions League.
Collymore wrote in his Mirror column: “[Chelsea’s win at Everton] was a job done professionally and underlined they have winners in their dressing room – players who have won leagues, Champions Leagues, Europa Leagues and many other different trophies individually and collectively.”
Of Antonio Conte’s settled starting XI, seven have appeared in a major European final and the same number have lifted either the Champions League or Europa League trophy.
Squad players Cesc Fabregas and John Terry have also reached European finals, with Terry claiming both Champions League and Europa League winner’s medals.
Collymore added: “That highlighted a massive worry I have for the teams we will send into the Champions League.
“With the exception of the ageing group at Manchester United – Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Chelsea’s players are the only ones who have won anything big in the last four to six years.”
