Chelsea Ladies defeated Sunderland Ladies 7-0 on Sunday afternoon, and manager Emma Hayes believes the scoreline wasn’t a true reflection of the game. She believes the victory should have been more, while also admitting that the team’s attacking performance wasn’t at its best.
“We made a number of changes to the starting line-up to keep everyone fresh, and the response was largely positive,” Hayes told the official Chelsea website after the game.
“Karen and Erin, in particular, played very well and the latter scored two very good goals.
“It’s no exaggeration to say we could have doubled our goal tally, such was the number of chances we created, and even that was with an attacking performance which wasn’t our best.
“Some of our link-up and combination play, as well as the movement, was excellent, though, and I cannot be too critical of the players after they have won a game 7-0. It was absolutely fantastic to bring Fran off the bench for her first appearance of the season and it was no surprise to see her waste no time at all in opening her account.
“They were two typical Fran goals, instinctive finishes, and we’ve missed that at times over the past 12 months. Hopefully she has put her injury problems behind her now.”
