With the league being wrapped up, and Chelsea left with just one more important game to end the season, it’s that stage of the season where the club starts negotiating contract offers with players who are due for contract negotiations and extensions.
According to the Telegraph, there has been a meeting between the club and Courtois’ advisers aimed at negotiating a new contract.
Courtois currently has a contract that runs to 2019 but his salary is still low for a keeper of his calibre. The Belgium goalkeeper currently earns £100,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge, which is around half of what De Gea is paid by Manchester United. With Real Madrid in the market for a top goalkeeper and also chasing Courtois and Manchester United’s David de Gea, Chelsea want to secure the long-term future of the Belgian.
Chelsea will, therefore, need to pay Courtois well over £150,000-a-week to tie him down to a new deal.
The Belgian has admitted that he’s happy at Chelsea and under Antonio Conte. So, getting him to sign a new deal might not be too difficult.
