While goalkeeper Eduardo has been the club’s first business in terms of contract renewal, Ghana international Besides Juan Cuadrado, whose deal has been premeditated since his move to Juventus during the summer, with his exit being recently triggered as Juve became champions of Italy, Christian Atsu is the first Chelsea player to be sold as we approach the summer transfer window.
The 25-year-old winger who spent the season on loan with Newcastle, has completed a move to join former interim manager Rafa Benitez.
Chelsea released an official statement confirming the exit of Atsu: “Chelsea Football Club has today reached agreement with Newcastle United for the permanent transfer of Christian Atsu,” the club released in a statement.
“Atsu, 25, has spent the 2016/17 campaign on loan with Newcastle, helping them secure a return to the Premier League at the first attempt. Atsu appeared 32 times, scoring five goals for the Championship winners.
“The Ghanaian joined Chelsea in 2013, and was named the Player of the Tournament at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, also scoring the Goal of the Tournament. He was also in the 2017 event’s Team of the Tournament after helping his country reach the semi-finals.
“We wish Christian the best of luck in his future career.”
