Former Arsenal and Manchester City striker Niall Quinn has revealed that summer signing Marcos Alonso is the team’s surprise package as Chelsea went on to win the league in style.
Alonso was signed from Fiorentina, having spent some time with Sunderland and he shone for Chelsea in his left wing-back role.
The 26-year-old didn’t come with a high profile, but was a symbol of consistency for the Blues. At one time, he was called a weak link in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system but the Spaniard finally won everyone’s trust and respect with his displays.
Quinn has labelled Alonso as his surprise package and also revealed that he never expected Alonso to win the title.
“You go right through the team,” Quinn said on Sky Sports.
“(Cesar) Azpilicueta, what a great season he’s had. The two wide players have done really well.
“Alonso was up at Sunderland a couple of years ago. Would I say he was going to be a Premier League winner when I saw him? No.
“The improvement was incredible, the team strength.
“(N’Golo) Kante of course got all the plaudits for what he does in midfield.
“(Diego) Costa up front, I love watching him up from.”
