Chelsea have already secured qualification for the Champions League next season, and the Blues will most certainly end up as league champions.
However, former Liverpool and Real Madrid player Steve McManaman believes teams in the Premier League don’t have what it takes to fight in Europe, and he also included Chelsea in that list. The worst part of it is that McManaman claims Chelsea will at most reach the quarterfinal stage if we strengthen the team.
“I look at all the Premier League and say it’s quite average.
“When you compare the English teams in the Champions League this year we’re way behind the top teams across Europe.
“They’re as consistent as you like, very tough to beat, play real quality football, I think we’re way behind.
“I think Chelsea are going to be more difficult to beat but I think the Chelsea now wouldn’t be anywhere near the teams that are still left in the Champions League.
“If they go and improve and buy players in the summer, then possibly [they can reach the quarter-finals].”
The comments of McManaman might feel derogatory, but such comments are what spur Chelsea on. We’re usually at the top when we play with our backs against the wall.
