Manchester United legend Gary Neville was a fine footballer during his playing days but his comments as a pundit sometimes can leave fans of the beautiful game shocked.
Despite Antonio Conte leading Chelsea to a Premier League title triumph in his first season in charge, Neville believes Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is a worthy Manager of the Season recipient.
“You always go for who wins the championship but I’ve gone for an alternative view,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“At the start of the season, I thought Tottenham would dip, I thought they would go backwards.
“Purely because of playing in the Champions League, the squad, the lack of investment compared to others.
“I thought they would go backwards in respect of toughness in mixing that.
“For Mauricio Pochettino to achieve what he has this year and to get Tottenham into second, to beat their overall record, for me it’s an outstanding managerial achievement.
“I think ultimately I’ve gone with him but I couldn’t disagree with Conte.”
I wonder when achieving second place with a team that came third last season became a better achievement than winning the league with a team that came 10th last season.
Conte deserves the Manager of the Season award for winning the league with a team that came 10th last season. Chelsea also went on an amazing 13 game winning run.
