After scoring a brace against Lyon in the Europa League semifinal clash, Bertrand Traore started on the bench for Ajax in their match against G.A. Eagles, as they won 4-0, a result which took them within one point of leaders Feyenoord, who lost 3-0 to Excelsior, with one match remaining. Marco van Ginkel played in PSV Eindhoven’s 1-1 draw at Groningen.
Also in the Dutch league, after helping Vitesse Arnhem win their first piece of major silverware last weekend, Lewis Baker, Matt Miazga and Nathan all started against Utrecht but a last-gasp goal condemned them to a 1-0 defeat.
In an interesting twist in the Championship table, Fikayo Tomori and Christian Atsu both started for already promoted Brighton and Newcastle respectively. Newcastle beat Barnsley 3-0 to pip Brighton to top spot after Chris Hughton’s side conceded a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at 10-man Aston Villa.
Lucas Piazon set up Fulham’s winner as they sealed sixth spot thanks to a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday, who had a player sent off in first-half stoppage time. Tomas Kalas also played for the Cottagers who will now face Reading in the play-off semi-finals.
Tammy Abraham’s Bristol City lost 1-0 against Birmingham, a result which meant the Midlands outfit narrowly escape relegation.
In League Two, Chelsea’s young goalkeeper Jamal Blackman was voted Wycombe’s Young Player of the Year, and he kept a clean sheet in their final game of the season. The Chairboys beat Cambridge United 1-0, but it was not enough to force them into the play-offs, as they finished one point adrift of the top seven.
In the Bundesliga, Andreas Christensen featured for Borussia Monchengladbach in defence as a last-ditch equaliser earned them a point in a 1-1 draw against FC Augsburg. That keeps their hopes of a European spot alive with two matches remaining. Michael Hector lined up at the back for Eintracht Frankfurt who lost 2-0 at Wolfsburg and are now effectively out of the race for a Europa League position via their domestic league, although they do contest the German Cup final against Borussia Dortmund at the end of the month.
In Serie A, Mario Pasalic started for AC Milan who hosted title-chasing Roma and although he scored late in the game, he and his team-mates were on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat. In La Liga, Victorien Angban was in action for Granada who lost 4-0 to Real Madrid.
