Chelsea needed an advantage in the race for the title and Chelsea got an advantage last night as Spurs lost a London derby to the Hammers 1-0 at the London Stadium.
Tottenham were really breathing down on Chelsea’s neck and felt invincible after winning nine league games in a row. The defeat to West Ham brought them down to earth and Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino couldn’t help but bemoan the defeat that has paved the way for Chelsea to increase the gap to 7 points.
“We played with how we did always – today was difficult but you can’t always play that well every week,” Pochettino said after the loss on Friday night.
“It’s a difficult question, if from there you win the league you learn. If you finish second, you improve.
“In football, in the moment you need to win in the moments. Today was a key moment and you need to show. It’s not about running more or less, it’s about if you win, you win.
“If you want to be a champion you must win. How? I don’t know. Today we missed a little bit.”
Chelsea will host Middlesbrough on Monday night and a win will take Chelsea 7 points clear.
