Chelsea striker Diego Costa revealed on Wednesday that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte had sent him a message to say that he was surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
Truth be told, Costa is the type of player Conte loves in footballing sense. Costa’s workrate and ability to score vital goals was definitely adored by Conte but the striker’s erratic behaviour meant Conte lost patience with Costa.
Here are 4 reasons why Antonio Conte wants Diego Costa out of Chelsea
1. COSTA NEVER WANTED TO PLAY UNDER CONTE
Diego Costa returned to his best form under Antonio Conte as Chelsea won the Premier League title but it would have been a different story if Costa had his way during preseason last summer.
Costa’s relationship with Conte didn’t start off well after Costa told Conte that he wanted to leave Chelsea last summer. In an interview with radio station El Larguero. Costa revealed Conte got angry with him after he asked to leave Chelsea last summer.
“The relationship with Conte didn’t start well because on arrival, I told him I wanted to go to Atletico,” Costa told Spanish radio station El Larguero.
“He got angry with me, almost didn’t look at me; I would have done the same.”
2. COSTA NEVER ADAPTED TO LIFE IN ENGLAND
Diego Costa never really adapted to life in England despite being in the country for three years. Costa always felt he was being targeted by officials in the Premier League.
“Here [the Premier League] things happen on the pitch and who is banned for three matches? Me,” Costa told Sky Sports.
“Who was banned for another three matches again? Me. So I’m here in London, not playing so I am at home really upset and that annoyed me every time and no matter how hard I tried I was still having problems.
“It’s supposed to be the best league in the world but it doesn’t make sense that if you touch someone or go in a bit hard you get banned for three matches. If those are the rules then I have to respect them. But all of this was making me want to leave the Premier League.
“At the beginning of the season I was angling for a move back to Atletico Madrid because I felt like I couldn’t play the way I wanted to.”
3. COSTA’S ROMANCE WITH CHINESE CLUB TIANJIN QUANJIN IN JANUARY
Antonio Conte had a bust-up with Diego Costa in January after it emerged the striker wanted a move to the Chinese League. Conte dropped Costa for Chelsea’s visit to Leicester City. The pair settled their differences afterwards but Costa’s form dropped after the rumours from China. Did Conte really forgive the striker after the incident in January? It could be that Conte never really forgave Costa but just carried along so that Chelsea’s title charge wouldn’t be derailed.
4. COSTA’S CONSTANT FLIRTATION WITH ATLETICO MADRID
Diego Costa constantly flirted with Atletico Madrid throughout the course of the season and this could have infuriated Conte a lot. Costa granted several interviews during the season in where he talked about his desire to return to Atletico Madrid. Conte is a manager who expects total loyalty from his players and Conte definitely wasn’t happy with Costa’s constant romance with Atletico Madrid.
Is Conte right to ask Chelsea’s top goalscorer for three consecutive seasons to leave the club?
