Chelsea is keen on signing a central defender this summer in order to continue to dominate the English league. Reports have strongly linked Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk with our club, but with too many clubs lining up for the talented back man, and Liverpool said to be his favored destination, Chelsea are looking elsewhere.
Last season, as Conte arrived, we were strongly linked with a move for Italy’s Leonardo Bonucci, and that was mostly because he’d worked with Conte during the latter’s Juve days. The player did eventually say he was staying back at Juve though, and this season, reporters are saying he may be a target for Chelsea again.
According to reports, Bonucci is open to a move to Chelsea after his UCL failure with his current club, Juve. The player is yet to officially say anything, as are Chelsea, but if the rumors are true, it raises the question of who Chelsea should really go for between the two defenders.
Virgil van Dijk is talented and young, and that makes him a great addition to any team, however, he’s a hot property at the moment. With the host of clubs lining up for his signature, his acquisition fee will definitely be on the high side.
Bonucci, on the other side, is 30, and still very good. Of course, that doesn’t mean he’s cheap, but so far, there aren’t that many clubs that have been linked with the player, so that should keep his price reasonable.
With these two players, it’s a question of youth vs experience, but knowing that Bonucci can play for another 4 years at least, it wouldn’t be a bad alternative to spending so much on an upcoming talent. It is my opinion, and whichever the club eventually chooses will be fine by me.
