Chelsea have been handed an unlikely advantage in the race to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer.
The Dutch defender was reportedly close to joining Liverpool from the Saints, but Van Dijk’s proposed Liverpool transfer has been called off as the Blues’ renew interest in the 26-year-old.
Van Dijk looked set to join Liverpool after indicating his preference to work under Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, but the Reds revoked their interest in the Southampton defender, as Southampton reacted furiously to Liverpool’s move for their star defender and were threatening to report the Reds to the Premier League for tapping him up.
Liverpool have now pulled out of the race and Chelsea fans have reacted happily.
VAN DIJK IS THE BEST CB IN THE LEAGUE. Can't wait for Chelsea to sign him, world class baller. https://t.co/y7PFFsXxem

Don't want Bonucci for 50m. We already have two 30+ defenders. It's either Van Dijk/Koulibaly or no one.
