Chelsea were reportedly favourites to sign Everton star Romelu Lukaku this summer, but recent reports suggest Manchester United are also interested in signing Lukaku.
According to a report by the Daily Star, Jose Mourinho had targeted Atletico Madrid star Antoinne Griezmann as the man he wanted to play in behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But an injury to Ibrahimovic means he won’t be fit until the middle of next season – and this has forced the club to re-evaluate their options.
According to the Daily Star, a United insider said: “Griezmann had been a target but the club’s priorities have changed since Ibra’s injury.
“The club are now looking at alternatives who can play in the No.9 role – as opposed to a luxury No.10.”
Lukaku wants to play in the Champions League, and the report also claims United having sneaked in the Champions League by winning the Europa League are preparing a mega-bucks package to convince Lukaku to snub a Stamford Bridge return.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward worked with Mini Raiola on the £86m transfer deal for Paul Pogba, and is keen on doing so for Lukaku.
