Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wants to boost Chelsea’s defensive options this summer and according to a report on The Telegraph, Conte has asked Chelsea to sign Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci or Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk.
Chelsea hierarchy are reluctant to sign 30-year-old Bonucci for £50 million and would reportedly go for Southampton’s Van Dijk who is aged 25.
Chelsea have a long-standing policy of only handing out one-year contracts to players over the age of 30 who are already at the club and the board believes signing a younger Van Dijk would represent more value for money.
Chelsea are monitoring Van Dijk’s situation at Southampton after the Saints reported Liverpool to the FA for tapping the defender and the Blues could make a move for the 25-year-old defender if he tells the Saints he no longer wants to play for them.
Southampton have a good relationship with Chelsea, having signed Ryan Bertrand and Oriol Romeu in relatively uncomplicated deals and Chelsea hope the good relationship with Southampton would help the Blues sign Van Dijk.
