Chelsea were strongly linked with a move for Romelu Lukaku though various reports claimed Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte, preferred Alvaro Morata.
Conte revealed in a press conference that Morata is a player he likes and even tried to sign three years ago as Juventus manager before he left Juventus.
“I wanted him when I was at Juventus before I left,” Conte said as quoted on Daily Mail.
“In that period he was very young but now, with experience at Juventus and Real Madrid, he is ready to come to Chelsea and to play for us.
“You know very well the dynamic of the market: it seemed that Morata would finish at Manchester United and Lukaku at Chelsea. Instead it happened the other way around.”
When asked if he preferred Lukaku, Conte said: “It is not important to say. For me, Lukaku and Morata are at the same level, first choice for a great club like Chelsea and United.
“He made a good step forward since three years ago; now he is one of the best strikers in Europe. He has great potential, he can improve a lot. Last season he didn’t play a lot of games but scored 20 goals [from 19 starts]. He is very young and has a lot of space and room to improve and I want to improve him a lot.”
