One of the most pleasing news for fans is the announcement of a new quality signing that would beef up their team. You could see the exasperation when Chelsea missed out on the Lukaku deal only for the fans to be cheered up with the signing of Antonio Rudiger on a five-year contract for £34m from AS Roma.
The 24-year old defender is surely a good defender, though not yet the best, but can be the best at Chelsea. His experience, versatility and ability will be essential to Chelsea, especially after the exits of John Terry and Nathan Ake to Aston Villa and Bournemouth respectively. Sporting Director, Michael Emenalo sounded out the German defender potentials during his unveiling.
“We are pleased to be able to bring in a player of proven quality who adds to our defensive options,” Emenalo said during the unveiling of Chelsea’s new signing.
“Antonio is still young but is experienced at club and international level and possesses all the requisite attributes to thrive in the Premier League. We have been aware of him for some time and we are confident he will fit in well with the squad.”
Here are 3 star roles the German could possibly fill up at Chelsea:
The German can play as a centre back alongside Gary Cahill, David Luiz or Cesar Azpilicueta in Conte’s preferred 3-4-3 formation. His all round game as a centre back has improved drastically over the years with Stuttgart, Roma and even the German National team. His ball-playing skill coupled with his positional sense of play and stamina makes him an ideal signing for Chelsea.
Rudiger first started out his professional career as a right-back before moving to centre back. It is believed he could do a job there if the need arises.
Rudiger’s power, stamina and ball playing skills could also see him line up in defensive midfield if suspensions or injuries hit the team or if Conte decides to be more pragmatic in certain games.
Certainly, the newest true blue is surely one that will colour the skies at Chelsea. Let’s live the blue dreams. Cheers!
