Chelsea were linked with moves for Alvaro Morata and Romelu Lukaku before the latter joined rivals Manchester United and Chelsea agreed a fee with Real Madrid for Morata.

According to Steve Nicol, Morata wasn’t the first choice of Chelsea’s transfer committee to replace Diego Costa but he was Antonio Conte’s first choice.

“I have to say I think this signing is the signing that Conte would want or prefer,” Nicol said on ESPN FC.

“You said that he wasn’t first choice, he probably wasn’t first choice for the transfer committee, that’s what it looked like.

“I think he was Conte’s first choice, absolutely fits in at Chelsea for me, no danger.

“You can’t guarantee goals but I’ll tell you what, I’d be shocked if he doesn’t score a bag of them.”
