Chelsea were keen on signing former prodigy Romelu Lukaku this summer from Everton, but Manchester United hijacked the deal and signed the Belgian for £75 million.
Lukaku was keen on a return to Stamford Bridge, but with Chelsea and Everton yet to agree a fee, United came into the deal and submitted a fee of £75 million that was immediately accepted by Everton.
Lukaku is now a Manchester United player and Jose Mourinho has taken a dig at his former side by claiming Lukaku shunned Chelsea for United because he wanted to play for a bigger club.
“Romelu is a natural fit for Manchester United. He is a big personality and a big player,” Mourinho said.
“It is only natural that he wants to develop his career at the biggest club.”
There’s a popular saying that ‘he who laughs last laughs best’. Only time will tell.
