Before leaving Stamford Bridge for Aston Villa this summer, John Terry was Chelsea’s longest-serving player. So with John Terry gone, who is Chelsea’s longest-serving player?
You are wrong if you mentioned Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard or Cesar Azpilicueta.
Chelsea’s longest-serving player is a goalkeeper most Chelsea fans don’t even know.
24-year-old Matej Delac is Chelsea’s longest serving player and he is yet to make his Chelsea debut since joining Chelsea from Croatian side Inter Zapresic in September 2010.
Since joining Chelsea in 2010, Delac has had loan spells in nine different clubs – Vitesse Arnhem (Holland), Dynamo Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic), Vitoria (Portugal), Inter Zapresic (yes, his former club), Vojvodina (Serbia), FK Sarajevo (Bosnia), Arles-Avignon (France), FK Sarajevo (again) and Mouscron (Belgium).
Delac’s only Chelsea appearance is a 45 minute appearance vs Olimpija in Slovenia… in a 2014 pre-season friendly.
Delac has never been allowed to play in England due to his inability to secure a work permit.
“I know about that fact, the fact I have the longest-running professional contract with Chelsea,” Delac told Goal.com.
“This summer, people at the club told me that, we had a good laugh. Yes, it is a little strange but it is all football.”
