Ahead of the new Premier League season which is set to kick off this weekend, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte reflected on what made Chelsea so strong last season.
“Usually when you arrive after a bad season there is great motivation, especially for a big team like Chelsea,” said Conte as quoted on Chelsea’s official website.
“To finish 10th in the table (in 2015/16) wasn’t good and for that reason I knew inside every single player there was great motivation.
“Then, we worked very hard to improve our tactical and physical aspects and I have to say thank you to my players, because every coach can have many ideas about football, but you have to transfer those ideas to your players and they must trust in your ideas.
“It was a big decision and a crucial decision in terms of us winning the league last season,’ Conte added, when asked about his decision to switch to a three-man defence early on in the campaign.
“We started to play with a back four but despite the fact we won our first three games, I wasn’t satisfied because I didn’t see the right balance in my team and during those games I felt as if anything could happen. But the new solution was in my mind at the start of the season because I knew I had the players with the right characteristics to play with that formation.”
