Chelsea played the first penalty shootout under Antonio Conte and the Blues lost 4-1 to the Gunners.
A penalty shootout is a game of luck, but you still have your part to play; you have to work out your luck.
Conte’s penalty takers list didn’t seem impressive as he opted to use Thibaut Courtois as his second penalty taker.
I haven’t seen Gary Cahill play a penalty in a Chelsea shirt before and didn’t feel at ease when he lined up as the first kicker. But to the skipper’s credit, he did pull off a nice one.
The choice of Courtois as the second taker was even more suspect and the Belgian bundled his shot off target. By the time Morata missed the third one for Chelsea, the shootout was no longer a contest.
The likes of David Luiz and Cesc Fabregas should be well ahead of Courtois to play a penalty, but the Italian’s intuition failed him this time and it cost Chelsea the Community Shield.
