The last time an Arsenal player crossed the border of North London to West London to sign for Chelsea, it was perceived as a deal stirred by an insatiable desire to earn more pounds. Then, Roman Abramovich’s spending spree was at its full fuelled by his ambition to sign the best players in the world for Chelsea. That player was Ashley Cole and Arsenal fans always taunted him by calling him: ‘Cashley Cole’. He moved in a deal that saw William Gallas move to Arsenal plus £5m. In retrospect, Chelsea got the better deal. Three seasons ago, the blues fans saw legendary goalkeeper, Petr Cech leave for Arsenal and it looked as though things evened up.
Ambition and success are twin forces that play a role in a player’s decision to join a club. Reports of Chelsea agreed deal to sign Arsenal’s Oxlade-Chamberlain is perfect for the club. Blues supporters should be happy as this shows the club is heading in the right direction. Chelsea in reality have the ambition for success and are always up as contenders to win major honours. It’s obvious the player is not moving to Chelsea for the money, but to win trophies.
The deal makes so much sense because at 24, the Ox still has a good resale value, yet to enter his prime and surely his versatility to the team will be vital. More so, as an England International, he raises the club’s quota for homegrown players. With the capture of one of our rival’s best players, the club is showing ambition for unprecedented success.
Let’s enjoy the moment. Cheers!
