Chelsea would welcome Burnley to Stamford Bridge today in our first game of the new Premier League season, and the Blues will have to do so without Pedro Rodriguez. The Spaniard suffered an injury against Arsenal in the Community Shield and is yet to recover from it, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has confirmed.
“Pedro is not available because he is suffering from an injury he picked up in the Arsenal game (last week) and he wasn’t able to recover, it’s a knock on his ankle,” Conte said.
With Eden Hazard out injured, Chelsea have Willian as the experienced winger and then two other youngsters Jeremy Boga and Charly Musonda.
Will Conte choose to play Musonda against Burnley?
The 20-year-old is yet to make his Premier League debut for Chelsea and today presents him the opportunity to do so.
Conte is short in the wing positions, but played Alvaro Morata from the left wing during pre-season against Inter Milan – a move that backfired. Will he do so again against Sean Dyche’s men?
Another option for Conte is to play a 3-5-2 formation with Michy Batshuayi and Morata spearheading the attack.
And finally, if Conte wants to maintain his traditional 3-4-3 formation, he’d have to use a winger and only Charly Musonda and Jeremy Boga are available as backups to Pedro at the moment.
Will Conte take the risk and give Musonda not just a Premier League debut but his first league start for Chelsea?
We have a few hours until the release of the teamsheet.
