The Premier League transfer window ended yesterday, and that of the La Liga ends tonight, and so far Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have been unable to reach an agreement for the Chelsea number 19.
According to Sky Sports sources, Costa’s chances of rejoining Atletico Madrid on Spain’s Deadline Day have been described as “unlikely but not impossible”.
Sky Sports reveal two things that have made the deal even more difficult. First, Atletico have so far offered only half of what Chelsea want for the striker, which is £50m.
Secondly, Atletico are also reluctant to pay Costa’s £150,000 a week wages before he can play for them in January, and one option being actively pursued is to find a loan club for Costa to join until then.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have now taken the shock decision of including Costa in their Premier League squad.
Costa is currently in his hometown of Lagarto in Brazil and has refused to return to Chelsea after a major fallout with manager Antonio Conte at the start of the summer.
Atletico Madrid were continuing to negotiate with Chelsea on Thursday as they sought to secure the transfer before the Spanish transfer window closed on Friday night, and with their transfer ban, it will be very difficult for them to sign Costa and loan him out tonight.
Let’s see how this movie episode ends at midnight today.
UPDATE: Diego Costa failed to join Atletico Madrid before the Spanish transfer window ended on Thursday night and the 28-year-old striker will remain at Stamford Bridge. He could still move in January when Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban will be lifted.
