It was a busy transfer window for Chelsea as the Blues signed Willy Caballero, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alvaro Morata, Antonio Rudiger, Danny Drinkwater and Davide Zappacosta.
Nemanja Matic left Chelsea for Manchester United, Nathaniel Chalobah left for Watford while Ruben Loftus-Cheek joined Crystal Palace on loan. Kurt Zouma and Tammy Abraham also left Chelsea on loan.
Nathan Ake, Asmir Begovic, Dominic Solanke and Christian Atsu left Chelsea on permanent deals while John Terry joined Aston Villa after his Chelsea contract ended.
Pundit Paul Merson gave Chelsea’s transfer business a B- rating and revealed Chelsea would have received a higher rating if Nemanja Matic didn’t leave for Manchester United.
“Diego Costa isn’t going to play for Chelsea again – the manager will lose face if he comes back – and they didn’t get Romelu Lukaku, so the big question is who will get all the goals,” Merson wrote on Sky Sports.
“They’ve got to hope the move for Alvaro Morata works. I didn’t think they needed a lot and Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko are good players and I would have given them a higher mark if they hadn’t let Nemanja Matic move to Manchester United.
“I also wonder if Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Nathaniel Chalobah will come back to haunt them?”
