Many Chelsea fans have been left bewildered as to why Chelsea striker Diego Costa was excluded from Chelsea’s Champions League 25-man squad.
Costa sought out a move to Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window after falling out with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, and he was axed from the team.
Atletico were keen on signing back Costa from Chelsea but both clubs couldn’t reach an agreement before the close of the Spanish transfer window. So this meant Costa will be stuck with Chelsea until January at least.
Atletico and Chelsea are both in Group C in the UEFA Champions League, and if Costa featured in any of the Champions League group games he would be cup-tied and this will make it impossible for him to play in the Champions League for Atletico should he eventually make the transfer in January.
And if Costa is cup-tied, his value would also diminish if Chelsea eventually sell him in January because no club will be willing to pay the required £50 million for a player who won’t feature in the Champions League.
So at the end of the day, the decision to keep Costa off the Champions League squad is one that will benefit both Costa and Chelsea.
