David Luiz’s red card against Arsenal is Chelsea’s 3rd red card in our last three games against the Gunners (excluding the preseason friendly) and this pattern is becoming worrisome.
Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes David Luiz can have no complaints about the red he received for his tackle on Sead Kolasinac.
“That challenge by David Luiz was scandalous. He can have no complaints about his red,” Sutton wrote in Daily Mail.
“Luiz seemed irritated by Alexis Sanchez alongside him and lost his head when Sead Kolasinac went for the ball.
“He came off his feet and went over the top of the ball. In terms of dangerous play that ticks all the boxes. Michael Oliver won’t have many easier decisions to make this season.
“Luiz had earlier been booked after his attempt to score from an overhead kick hit Laurent Koscielny in the hand.
“The force was every bit as great as Sadio Mane’s high boot on Ederson, so why didn’t Oliver show a red card?
“In my view, neither challenge warranted a red as both were honest attempts to play the ball. But there seems to be no clarity or consistency whatsoever from referees on this issue.”
