Davide Zappacosta had an impressive Champions League debut for Chelsea as the Blues defeated Qarabag 6-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Zappacosta was in fine form for Chelsea on the night and in just his first start for Chelsea, he scored a sumptuous goal.
Antonio Conte has confirmed that Zappacosta’s first Chelsea goal was indeed supposed to be a cross which turned out to be a goal, but he was delighted with the Italian’s performance.
“He told me he was aiming to cross,” he confirmed in his post-match press conference.
Conte was delighted with the full-back’s general performance and picked out many positives from his first night in charge of a Chelsea Champions League match.
He added: “I think it was a good result. We start the Champions League in the right way. I saw the right commitment from my players. Great focus, great concentration from the start of the game.
“These are tricky games and we must pay great attention but I’m pleased for the great performance from our players.
“I think a lot of positive things for us and Batshuayi to score and Zappacosta on his first appearance at Stamford Bridge – he played very well.
“[Eden] Hazard is trying to find the best form and we are happy to see him running on the field. A lot of positive things.”
