It’s been one hell of a weekend for Blues supporters after a traumatic defeat against Crystal Palace last weekend. An act of redemption is badly needed to salvage our season and the Champions League gives Conte and the players an opportunity to right their wrongs.
Up next is Roma, and here are 3 changes to the starting lineup that could benefit Chelsea:
LUIZ FOR FABREGAS:
The obvious truth is that Chelsea are a more solid and balanced team with a double pivot midfield of complimentary defensive midfielders. In view of this, for all of Fabregas attacking intelligence, his lack of defensive nous is more of a weakness rather than strength in Chelsea’s tactical play. The contest with Roma is bound to be physical and tactical, and so we will need a player in a perfect mould of a midfield combatant. In the absence of Kante, Conte’s next choice to partner Bakayoko should be David Luiz.
PEDRO FOR WILLIAN:
The Spaniard was one of Chelsea’s most outstanding players last season and even edged Willian out from the side. But Conte’s preference of Willian this season has failed to yield results. The Brazilian’s form and fitness has been scrutinized in recent games after some poor displays this term. He clearly looks a shadow of the player that was Chelsea’s best player two seasons ago. With little to suggest that the Brazilian has turned a corner, Conte needs to give Pedro the chance to show the stuff he’s made of against Roma.
MORATA FOR BATSHUAYI:
For all the talks about Conte’s distrust in Batshuayi, it was justified the more by the Belgian striker’s insipid display against Palace. His movement and positional play are reminiscent of s striker playing non-league football. His displays only helped to give Conte reasons to keep using him from the bench. Crucially, Morata’s return to training and contention for match action is a timely boost as certainly he should reclaim his place in the starting lineup.
