LOSING THE PLOT: 3 REASONS WHY CHELSEA LOST TO CRYSTAL PALACE

How can you describe a team’s cowed display? Definitely it is enough to actually make one lose like Conte said after seeing his Chelsea team beaten by the league worst team. Yesterday’s defeat was Chelsea’s fourth defeat against a Palace in four years in a London derby and our third defeat of the season. Tony Pulis, Alan Pardew, Sam Allardyce and now Roy Hodgson have all found a way to beat Chelsea. This means we are already nine points off leaders Manchester City in just 8 games played. This is a pitiful record that needs a reverse in fortune.

Here are 3 reasons for Chelsea’s defeat to Crystal Palace:

SECOND BEST PERFORMANCE:

Chelsea were toothless, lacked the drive and belief that they could win. Whereas the Palace players played with real purpose, hunger, ambition and were virtually first to every ball. Much should be said of the players’ body language as they appear to be disinterested in our quest to defend the title.

DEFENSIVE FRAILTY:

One of the reasons for Chelsea’s title success last season was our defensive solidity which saw us keep a handful of clean sheets. But this season seems to be different as a lack of defensive understanding which could be borne out of the fact that Conte rotation has affected the chemistry of the back three players. Consistency is lacking which sees players failing to execute basic defensive game plans. Against Palace, the defence fell apart and the centre could not hold.

DEEPENING INJURY CRISIS:

The loss of key players, Morata and Kante and the inability of their replacements to be replicate their outstanding displays is a sickening problem for Chelsea. Batshuayi’s unconvincing forward displays would definitely leave doubts in Conte’s mind about his inability to star for Chelsea, while Bakayoko was no match to Kante’s powerful and buccaneering displays. Now, injury to Moses, now leaves Conte with another mountain to climb.

The gap from our title contenders is widening and Chelsea can’t afford to lose more grounds. Desperate times call for desperate measures which demands that Conte and Chelsea must find solutions to halt the slide before it turns into a free fall. Let’s hope for the best. Cheers!
